That's interesting, Lin. If it did say Willcommen, I would assume it may have been a restauration from the original writing and therefore be some type of 'old German'. My comment was never meant to be critical, I was more thinking in helpful terms :)

Peggy, I was going through some photos taken on that trip, and I found one that clearly shows the spell you advised. It seems that the K was worn/faded on the sign, and in several images it did look like a C. I have adjusted this to incorporate you full suggestion text. Thanks again.

All, true, though the sign above the alcove in which we ate said simply "Willcommen", so I was about 1/2 correct (slightly better than my career average). I shall adjust it, thanks for the help.
